Versatile:
Veneer is a true all-rounder

Zülpich. Veneer can be used to realise all kinds of creative and individual projects. It is made from specially selected trees, which are processed into this elegant and natural material using a great deal of expertise.

Only very few of the 40,000 or so types of wood found on earth can be processed into high-quality veneer. ‘Around 140 species are suitable for production, and within these species there are only a few specimens that score highly in terms of inner beauty and are therefore suitable for the production of veneers,' says Axel Groh, forester and chairman of the Initiative Furnier + Natur (IFN). Among other things, the tree must have uniform growth and the trunk must be as round and straight as possible for perfect processing. ‘A uniform bark pattern is also important - preferably without any large, unsightly branches,' says Groh. Traces of lightning strikes, hail or insect infestation also mean that a tree is unsuitable as a veneer supplier. Once the right specimen has been selected by a trained eye and transported to the veneer factory, the tree trunk is sustainably and gently transformed layer by layer into attractive veneer using various methods.

The many areas of application for veneer
There may not be 1,000 possibilities, but there are certainly several hundred where veneer can play to its strengths. The use of the best of the tree to cover surfaces is widely known, especially for all types of furniture, interior and exterior doors, wall and ceiling coverings, and floors. In addition, there are aesthetic highlights such as lamps, washbasins and bathtubs. ‘Another important area for the use of veneers is various everyday objects,' says IFN Managing Director Dirk-Uwe Klaas. These include wheeled suitcases, mouse pads, bank cards, hotel and business cards, table sets, packaging material, cups, plates, cutlery and even glasses. ‘Even kiteboards for water sports enthusiasts, downhill skis for the cold season and longboards for sun worshippers in the city and countryside can now be manufactured or finished with veneer,' says Klaas. Veneer is also indispensable in the music business. Whether stringed and plucked instruments, sophisticatedly patterned drums, basses and electric guitars, or fine pianos and concert grand pianos: with its attractive appearance and naturalness, veneer turns every object suitable for finishing into a guaranteed unique work of art. Initiative Veneer + Nature (IFN)
The Initiative Furnier + Natur (IFN) e.V. was founded in 1996 by the German veneer industry and its partners. Today it is supported by European companies from the veneer industry, the trade and the veneer processing industry as well as trade associations of the wood industry. The aim of the association is to promote veneer as a natural all-round material.
